GGBS

GGBS is a by-product of the iron and steel industry. In the blast furnace, slag floats to the top of the iron and is removed. GGBS is produced by quenching the molten slag in water and then grinding it into a fine powder.

Chemically it is similar to, but less reactive than, Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC).

When mixed with water it will hydrate in a similar way to Portland cement. It is often used in combination with OPC, typically in the range of 60% OPC and 40% GGBS – 30% OPC and 70% GGBS, according to the ultimate function of the cement. Very occasionally, it can be found up to a ratio of 90% GGBS and 10% OPC, Cemblend can provide any of these products pre-blended direct to your site.

GGBS

COMPOSITION

Concrete made with GGBS cement sets more slowly than concrete made with only OPC, depending on the amount of GGBS in the cement mix, but also continues to gain strength over a longer period leading to improved overall durability and life expectancy.  It also assist in the resistance to chemical attack of the concrete when compared with straight OPC mixes.
